This chapter focuses on the scholarly debate about the Nicomachean Ethics known as the “intellectualism debate”. At issue is the nature of the activity with which Aristotle identifies flourishing. Intellectualists say that Aristotle identifies flourishing with the single, solitary activity of contemplation. Inclusivists disagree and claim that flourishing includes both contemplative activity and activity that expresses the virtues of character.
